Get More From The Lottery

Millions of people all over the UK purchase lottery tickets every single week. There are many different lotteries that you can enter, and obviously the more tickets you buy, the higher your chances of winning are likely to become. But is there a way of actually picking UK lottery tickets that are more likely to win?

Well, at the end of the day there is absolutely no way of actually picking tickets that have a higher chance of winning than others. When it comes down to it you have absolutely no control over the numbers that are going to spill out of the machine, and therefore how can you possibly hope to find a system that will help to predict random numbers? This is not going to be the case, and therefore when you are picking tickets and numbers you simply need to follow other methods.

It is, therefore, a lot better to simply pick numbers that are important to you. Maybe this is the only real way of influencing fate and giving yourself the best chance of getting some luck.

It is, therefore, a good idea to try to choose numbers that are important to you specifically. Think about numbers such as birthdates, phone numbers, the numbers on your home, bank account numbers, or anything else, that have a personal relevance for you.

You should certainly branch out and think about numbers about people who you love as well. Do not only think about numbers that are relevant to your own life, but think about numbers that are very important to people who you care about as well.

Of course, there really is no harm in actually spending time looking back at past results in order to find out if there are certain patterns that begin to appear. People do actually spend a great deal of time looking back through these figures in order to try to work out patterns and find out if any numbers tend to show up more than others. While this is unlikely to yield any significant results, it may be worth a pop anyway.

Of course, what many people tend to do is simply to use the random generator, either in the shop, or online. To be fair, this is just as likely as any to yield results.

Simply choose some numbers by whatever method and hope you get lucky.

Does Winning The Lottery Make You Happy?

Call it envy, jealousy or moral disdain, but there’s no doubt that many of us have a problem with what we deem to be unearned wealth.

Go back in history and you’ll see sticky ends attributed to the fabulously wealthy. King Croesus was supposedly burned alive on a pyre, while Crassus was made to drink molten gold, but both these grisly fates may simply have been wishful thinking on the part of the envious.

More recently, lottery wins seem to provoke heated discussion at the watercooler and in the back of taxis. Do they enjoy their windfalls? Or does their good fortune have the capacity to make them miserable, leaving them rudderless in a morass of luxury?

There have certainly been many winners who had their lives turned upside down by a big win. Relationships can break down under the strain, friendships can come under pressure. And the tabloids love nothing more than a winner who has frittered away all their money.

From a mental wellbeing point of view there are clearly dangers. Psychologist Caroline Schuster-Cotterell says a big win can leave people reeling in much the same way as any other major, life-changing event.

“It really can be disruptive. The first thing is the shock, not expecting it and suddenly winning. It is the speed and rate of change that tend to cause people trouble.”

But of course, while the odd millionaire can crop up in a long-term study, it’s not going to be possible to study the psychological effects on the mega winners.

“There is no quality research on what happens to people with absolutely enormous wins – £50m is so extreme it is hard to know how to fit it in.”

And the newspapers have often relished the travails of the big winners. In 2007, one tabloid noted that a multimillion pound winner had put on a stone, split up with her boyfriend and become reclusive.

Interviews with those who have frittered away the money or been through a personal ordeal make more impact than those who have lived quietly and happily.

But the latter appear to be plentiful.

Grimsby-born Roy Gibney won £7.5m in 1998 and says life is “absolutely marvellous”. He lives in a villa in Cyprus with his wife and child much of the year, spending some time in Nairn and some in Grimsby. That is not to say that he is never unhappy.

“If you take a normal life everyone has ups and downs but multiply it by an awful lot. The happiness it can bring is multiplied by a thousand times but it can bring heartache as well as people trying to rip you off.

“Obviously, I’ve had my downs – family falling out with you because they want more money.”

But the key thing is retaining a “sensible head”, he says. His grown-up daughters had houses bought for them, but they still have to work.

“I won when I was 44 – it was the right age to win it.”

But ultimately he views his life as full of opportunities he would not otherwise have had.

“Me, my wife and son flew to New York a couple of days before Christmas. We couldn’t have done that normally.”

Many journalists have been to speak to Viv Nicholson, the woman who famously vowed to “spend, spend, spend” when she scooped £152,000 on the football pools in 1961.

People expect that having spent all the money and endured a number of personal tragedies they will hear a story of regret and the corrosive power of sudden wealth. But they are disappointed.

“My experience was fantastic,” says Mrs Nicholson. “I just had everything, did everything I wanted, things that I would never have had. I don’t regret a thing. I did it my way. I live my life the way I wanted to.”

She is dismissive towards those who emphasise the value of saving over spending in the pursuit of happiness.

“Life is boring and there is too much nonsense.”

The big winners now have a support structure provided by Camelot’s winners’ advisers. It is in the firm’s interest that winners appear happy.

Go away somewhere new

Dot Renshaw, former head of player services and now a consultant for Camelot, advises winners to take a holiday somewhere new in the immediate aftermath of a jackpot.

“Try and get a holiday away from everything so you can try and come to terms with what’s happened,” she says. “Friends and family will have their own ideas of what you should be doing. Don’t rush into anything.”

Subsequently they line up a meeting with financial advisers and lawyers on how the money can be put to use, tax issues, and the making of a will.

But there is also help with the psychological side, both from former winners who are still in touch with Camelot and the advisers.

“We are not qualified counsellors, but we have over 40 years experience [between us] of dealing with jackpot winners.”

And for many people happiness is about enjoying their windfall while retaining their old friends and relationships.

“Their true friends are there for them,” says Ms Renshaw.

£82m Up For Grabs In EuroMillions

Lucky punters could join the jet set when a massive EuroMillions jackpot of £82 million comes up for grabs, Camelot said.Skip related content

The estimated prize is one of the biggest in the history of the game and comes hot on the heels of an amazing run of good luck for British players, the lottery operator said.

Since June last year, 10 EuroMillions winners have come from the UK, collecting more than £347 million.

Records were smashed in November when Les and Sam Scadding, from south Wales, and the “Magnificent Seven” syndicate from Liverpool stole the UK lottery crown and split a £90 million prize. That record was again beaten in February when Nigel Page, from Cirencester, won £56 million.

A month later, an anonymous British EuroMillions player won £39.7 million and another un-named ticket-holder won a huge £84.4 million prize in May.

A National Lottery spokesman said: “Players across the UK have been winning big on EuroMillions in the past year. Hopefully October will bring another addition to our Rich List with a massive cheque. With £82 million to play with, you could share your wealth with all your friends and family, and still have plenty left to change your own life beyond your wildest dreams.”

The bumper prize on offer in the next draw, which takes place on Friday October 1, came about after lottery companies “topped up” the jackpot fund to 100 million euro.

If one single ticket-holder wins, they will rank on the Sunday Times Rich List alongside the likes of actor Sir Sean Connery and pop star Robbie Williams. If no-one matches all five main numbers and two Lucky Star numbers to win the jackpot, then it will roll over to the following Friday’s draw on October 8.

More than £1.6 billion in prizes has been paid out to Britons since the £2-a-ticket EuroMillions game launched in February 2004.

The nine countries now playing EuroMillions are the UK, France, Spain, Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, Ireland, Portugal and Switzerland.

Time Runs Out For £1.5m Lotto Ticket Holder

somebody has lost the chance to celebrate

Originally posted to the Jarrow and Hebburn Gazette website.

TIME has now run out for South Tyneside’s mystery millionaire to collect their fortune.

A £1.5m jackpot-winning National Lottery ticket from March 27 was bought in the borough – but the deadline for collecting the bumper payout was 5.30pm yesterday.
The jackpot was won when balls 6, 11, 15, 32, 38 and 42 were drawn.

Now the £1,524,417 prize has been handed over to the National Lottery’s Good Causes Fund, and will be split between arts, charities, heritage, sports, and health, education and environment projects – though not specifically in South Tyneside.

A National Lottery spokesman said: “It’s a real shame, but there is still one winner – the nation.”

Lottery Winners Carry On Caravanning

LOTTO jackpot pair Ivan and Sue Westbury are having their first break since landing £7.7million – on a £9.50 Sun holiday.

The down-to-earth duo collected the Sun’s tokens before their July win and are now relaxing in a static caravan in Cornwall.

Even though they can afford to fly to anywhere in the world, Ivan, 64, vowed: “This won’t be our last £9.50. We love them.”

The dad-of-three, who owns a lightning conductor factory, had not had a day off work since bagging £7,706,631 – until yesterday. He and Sue, 63, of Nottingham, arrived at the caravan park in Ivan’s five-year-old Astra, which has done 100,000 miles.
With them were their dog Holly, 12, Ivan’s dad Frank, 88, Sue’s sister Debbie, 51, and her partner Rob Watts, 46.

They checked in, unpacked and sat down to watch Corrie in the five-berther while Ivan made them a cuppa.

He said: “We’d booked the holiday before the win and I always said we’d go on it.

“It’s our fourth £9.50 and we love them because the accommodation is good, clean and in good locations – and you can’t question the value.

“We can bring Holly without any hassles and we’ve found every break has been great fun and relaxing.”

He added: “Some will think we’re mad because we could go anywhere and stay in the lap of luxury – but this suits us down to the ground.”

Workaholic Ivan IS organising a “planned exit” from his business and also wants to buy a new house and car. He said: “Me and Sue can plan the future while we have a walk on the beach with Dad.”

Sue said: “We’re not flash. We’ll leave that to the WAGs who live in their palaces.”

National Lottery Winners in a Double Celebration

Posted by admin on Sep-16-2010

Originally posted to the alottery.com website

Winning a lottery jackpot is something most of us only ever dream of but last week saw National Lottery winners in a double celebration as not only had they scooped a £2.6 million jackpot, but they were also celebrating their Ruby Wedding Anniversary. Phillip and Sandra Sawyer from Birmingham have regularly been taking part in a family syndicate of four people and had been celebrating their Wedding Anniversary when their numbers came up on the National Lottery. Phillip checked the lottery numbers the following morning and discovered the win while his wife had a lie in.

Many people would have shouted the house down on such a discovery, but Phillip followed his usual routine while his wife slept, unaware that they had just won the National Lottery. When he did eventually wake Sandra he made her check the lottery numbers herself as she thought it was a practical joke.

The couple will share the National Lottery win with two other syndicate members who are their daughters. Phillip and Sandra plan to move out of their council home and buy their own house as do both of their daughters.

Aside from a holiday and a new BMW car, the couple have little other plans for their National Lottery fortune. Their two daughters plan to stay in their jobs to prevent them from getting bored, so it seems that this is one family who despite winning this huge National Lottery jackpot will continue to live the life that they have enjoyed for many years and maybe the syndicate will continue to buy lotto tickets for the National Lottery.
