Latest Lottery News Brings Relief to Victim of Stolen Ticket Case

Whenever a lottery player realizes they have won the jackpot, he or she always finds a safe place to hide to secret the ticket before they can claim their prize. In the latest lottery news this week however one poor winner nearly lost his ticket to an unscrupulous staff member at his local store.

Robert Miles of Syracuse, New York bought a scratch-off ticket in his local convenience store in October 2006. He realized he had won money and recognized the sum was a life-changing $5 million. Shop assistant Andy Ashkar, son of the store’s owners, managed to persuade Miles that he had in fact only won $5000 and offered to buy it off him for $4000.

Strangely the latest lottery news shows that Ashkar waited five years to claim the winnings. In March 2012 he finally turned up at the lottery office and offered to take a lesser amount in return for anonymity.

The lottery authorities smelt a rat and issued a news release to see if anyone else claimed the ticket. Robert Miles contacted the police, who then approached the lottery company on behalf of Miles.

During a long trial, a colleague of Robert Miles, Ramon Rosario, testified that he had been with Miles outside the store when they scratched off the two cards they had bought and that Mile shad become excited when he realized he had won the jackpot. Miles then returned alone into the store. The situation was further complicated by the fact that Miles and Rosario had been using drugs that day.

Ashkar was finally sentenced in July this year to a minimum of eight and a third years with a possible maximum of 25 years for the fraud. Unfortunately Robert Miles’ troubles were not yet over as it was only on the 23 August that the latest lottery news reported that a judge finally decided he was entitled to the winnings.

Miles told the court, “For 6 years I suffered, my family suffered, because I was taken advantage of.”

Ashkar took advantage of the rule that says stores can only pay out up to $600 in winnings and any higher amount has to claimed directly from the lottery administrators.

It is not clear what Robert Miles will do with his winnings but no doubt the latest lottery news will report his intentions. I should imagine he is just relieved that his ordeal is over.

Big Winners in US Lottery Latest News

The lottery latest news has brought two interesting stories from America this week. Clearly the Mega Millions and PowerBall lotteries are worth playing.

The first item of lottery latest news comes from the organizers of the Mega Millions draw. According to a press release, the draw is undergoing some changes in October this year; the success of the lottery means moves are underway to increase the number of winners in each prize draw.

The costs of each ticket will remain at $1 but the minimum jackpot will rise from $12 million to $15 million and the weekly rollover will increase by at least $5 million if there are no winners. There will also be changes to the number of balls used in the draw, which means the chances of winning a prize will increase to one in fifteen.

At the same time, in the lottery latest news, a massive jackpot has been drawn in the Powerball draw. On Thursday 8 August 2013 a jackpot of no less than $448 million was drawn.

Three tickets shared this vast sum and as yet one still remains unclaimed.

One of the winners, Paul White, a project engineer from Ham Lake, Minnesota, used to be criticized by his family for playing the lottery but now he has $58.3 million (after taxes) in his bank account, it seems they may change their tune. Paul told reporters “I’ve totally been waiting for this day my entire life.”

The divorced father of two has already employed a lawyer and financial advisor and is looking forward to making previous daydreams reality.

The lottery latest news shows that both the other tickets were sold in New Jersey, the first time in 20 years that two jackpot tickets were sold in the same state, and one was divided between a syndicate of county employees in a maintenance garage.

The 16 Orange County workers waved a replica cheque for $86 million (before taxes) at a press reception and told reporters they were “very happy, happy, happy.”

The area had recently been devastated by Hurricane Sandy so the money is particularly welcome in a community trying to rebuild; one of the winners indeed lost her home to the storm.

Each member of the syndicate will receive $3.8 million (after taxes) and one member, Barbara Jo Riivald, found the win particularly significant as her father had drawn up the legislation creating the state lottery programme.

The group is pretty close-knit and only one is considering leaving work. The lady who lost her home in the storm, Darlene Riccio, told the press conference “It has been an extremely tough year, but when we lost everything, this whole group really pulled together and helped me through.”

We wish all the winners the very best for the future and look forward to hearing more about their good fortune in more lottery latest news.

Exploring the Four Types of Lottery Games in the U.S

A Hand Holding Four Megamillions Lottery Tickets

Most of those who wish for a financial miracle, are looking towards state administered lotteries with confidence and hope that one day they will get lucky. In the absence of a national lottery, there are 43 distinct lotteries managed by various states and also a handful of multiple state lotteries. This means that there are plenty of opportunities for those who feel lucky, especially with no limitations being in place for people who reside in a different state than the one in which they intend to play the lottery.

The three types of number games

There are over 200 lottery games played throughout the United States, but they can be grouped in four categories and three of them are number games. One number games imply the fact that the player selects one number that has three, four and recently five digits, and then choose whether he intends to play this as a straight or a box. For the straight to be a winner the exact number needs to come, while the box will reward the player even if the digits come in a different order.

Multi-number games can be with one or two sets of numbers ranging from 1 to a certain value that is predefined, and the payouts depend on how many numbers are correctly predicted. The order in which the chosen numbers come doesn’t matter but it is difficult enough to predict all six numbers and that’s why the prizes are so generous. Among those with two sets of numbers, games such as Powerball or Mega Millions are very popular due to the huge rewards. The odds for someone to win in either of these games are dismal, but this doesn’t prevent fun seeking individuals from playing week after week. More over there are four types of games ran by state administered lotteries in the United States to learn more about them visit Lotterycrunch.com and participate in amazing lotteries from all around the world.

Keno type and other lottery games

Keno games are very popular throughout the United States and their resemblance with multi-number games is uncanny. The difference resides in the fact that the player chooses 10 numbers that range between 1 and 82 and twice as more numbers than the player selects are being drawn. This means that in a regular Keno game 20 numbers are drawn and once again the payouts vary depending on how many numbers one can predict.

Some states have their own games that resemble a more or less conventional lottery game, and the Kicker is one of those who don’t stray too far from traditional lotteries. In this case the difference is that the players are purchasing cards that have prearranged numbers, otherwise the rules stay the same. Last but not least there are states like California that run horse racing games such as the Daily Derby.

Is It Worth Playing Powerball and Mega Millions Anymore?

Lotteries are not a modern invention and have been around for quite a while; it looks like they are here to stay. Some of the most popular competitions such as the Powerball and USA Mega Millions have changed their rules over the course of time, and not all of the changes were for the better. For the vast majority of players, it is less important if the odds have reduced or improved because they know that regardless of the changes they are still underdogs. The prospect of winning huge jackpots is alluring enough, but switched on players would still like to know more about their chances of winning prizes.

The New Powerball Unveiled

The rules of the game have changed slightly but they are just as easy to understand and given the fact that players have virtually no control over the outcome of the game, many dismiss them as irrelevant. Essentially a player selects five numbers ranging between 1 and 59 and another one called the Powerball, which should range between 1 and 39. This means that in order to cash in on the big jackpot, you need to be terribly lucky because the odds of hitting all of the numbers are roughly 1 in 200 millions.

It is obvious that one needs to be an incurable optimist to actually expect to win the jackpot, but given the huge amounts and the success stories, very few will let the odds hurts their morale. Powerball might not be a solution for those who need a way to cover imminent expenses, but those who dream about incredible prizes will stick to this game until the bitter end. The new rules made it even more difficult to win, but while everyone immediately thinks about the jackpot when hearing about Powerball, there are also lower prizes waiting to be won.

A Decent Prize Even Without A Powerball

For a lottery ticket to qualify for the jackpot, all the five chosen numbers and the Powerball need to match. If the Powerball doesn’t agree, the player can still collect a decent prize and in this case the odds are somewhere around the value of one in 5 million. These prizes are won on a weekly basis but the jackpot is somewhat of a rarity and with each week that passes without a winner being decided, the jackpot grows.

The reason why this happens is that the insignificant odds demand a huge number of tickets to be sold in order for all of the possible combinations to be covered. Since this rarely happens the prize pool grows steadily until someone is lucky enough to cash in on the jackpot, and these are the moments that we hear about when watching TV. While the odds of winning are dismal, players can find the consolation in the fact that no one would bother rigging a game that puts players at too much of a disadvantage.

Global Lotteries: The Quiet Mega Millions Winners

If you won the winning lottery number, would you keep it quiet? This is a constant debate among lottery players – to announce your win or not.

Last month a retired couple from Red Bud, Illinois won $157,800,000 in one of the largest of the global lotteries, the Mega Millions draw, and for three weeks kept the news to themselves.

Merle and Patricia Butler bought a $3 ticket from their local store and watched the draw reported on the television news. Merle wrote the winning numbers on a pad and compared them with the ticket in his wallet. He spotted that they had matched the Mega Ball number and then each of the other numbers matched. He looked at the ticket for a few moments and then calmly told Patricia they had won.

Patricia started giggling and, as Merle puts it, “She giggled for about four hours!”

Like so many lottery winners, they both stayed awake that night watching the news and checking the Internet to see if they had to share the prize with anyone. In the morning they knew there were two other jackpot winners and then took the ticket with its winning lottery number and locked in the local bank.

The couple only told five close family members and then calmly worked with legal and financial advisers from outside the town while the local press and their neighbours desperately tried to find out who had won the top prize. It was known the winner came from the town and a couple of other people were ‘accused’ of being the lucky player but nobody guessed the real winners.

Sadly, unlike several other American states, Illinois requires all the jackpot winners to go public in order to show the money is fairly allocated but the Butlers ensured they had everything in order before they held a press conference.

Merle told reporters that winning the money on this, one of the largest global lotteries, was like a full-time job in itself but it will certainly make their retirement a lot more comfortable. They have no intentions of moving away from their hometown and want to help their children and four grandchildren in the best way they can.

Sometimes the story of someone who has matched the winning lottery number shows they deserve their good luck.

Global Lotteries: A Lucky Mega Millions Winner

Do you feel Friday 13th is lucky or unlucky? One player of one of the largest global lotteries, the American Mega Millions certainly found last Friday to be lucky.

Daniel Bruckner from California was in Long Island visiting family and friends in the area. He went food shopping, saw the size of the Mega Millions jackpot and thought he would have a go.

The 35-year-old financial analyst had just $26 in his wallet after the shopping trip so he decided to use it all to buy lottery tickets. He went back to his wife and his father and forgot all about it.

Later he was woken by his wife after his father discovered the winning lottery ticket for this, the most local of the global lotteries, had been bought at the local store. To keep them both happy, Daniel went downstairs and checked the numbers. One by one they agreed with the ticket he held.

“It just didn’t seem real and you just don’t believe it all,” he admitted.

He checked and double-checked the numbers but still the results showed he held the winning lottery number and so had won $208,000,000.

The Bruckners had been comfortable financially but Christine, Daniel’s wife had recently lost her job as a mortgage advisor. The couple did not know exactly what they would do with the money beyond paying school and other bills.

There is no doubt that they will have a more comfortable future however.

Global Lotteries: New York Mega Millions Winners

Winners’ stories come in from all round the world from each of the global lotteries available to play online.

One such story concerns one of the best lotteries to play: the Mega Millions draw in the USA. Seven coworkers from the New York division of Housing and Community Renewal won the $319 million jackpot in this draw earlier this year.

Mike Barth bought the winning ticket from a store in Albany, New York on 23 March. Ironically he was about to buy a ticket when he leaned down to collect a Snickers bar too. Another customer cut in front of him to take a ticket so Mike had to settle for the next one – the winning ticket!

The group doesn’t always play the lottery and only start when the jackpot creeps above $100 million. Another group member Gabrielle Mahar was first to realize they had won and she rang her supervisor, also a member of the lottery group, Kristin Baldwin. The other members thought they were the victims of a practical joke at first when they heard from fellow workers on a Saturday morning but the reality soon sank in.

Each member received $28,971,029 before tax and each has different uses for their winnings. Some are less ambitious than others: Mahar has her eyes on a dishwasher, another wants to go everywhere first class and a third wants to go to every Disney theme park available. For Mike Barth he simply wants a set of new tyres for his car and a college education for his son “not based on where he can go, but where he wants to go.”

Global lotteries are changing lives all the time!

TV Editor Wins The Mega Millions Lottery

Mother and Child Jumping on the Beach

One evening in May 2010, Gilbert Cisneros had just finished jury service having previously lost his job. He decided he wanted something to eat but his wife, Jacki, wanted to eat at KFC whilst Gilbert fancied something else. So Gilbert went out on his own.

He decided to eat Mexican but found it would cost $8 to park so he ended up at a Hawaiian restaurant instead. Whilst there he decided to buy ten lottery tickets for the multi-state Mega Millions lottery.

A few nights later, Jacki, who is a news night editor with KNBC television heard the winner of the Mega Millions had bought the lucky lottery ticket in Pico Rivera, California where she and Gilbert live.

She checked the ticket and screamed when she realized their lottery tickets had just won them $266 million. “I felt like my legs were going to fall out from beneath me,” she said.

She immediately rang Gilbert, who was in bed, at 2am and woke him up. She also rang and woke up a friend with the news. Having thought about the alternative, Jacki then decided to finish her shift before going home.

Interviewed on NBC the next day, lottery winner Jacki told interviewers she would carry on working, as she could not imagine doing anything else. Both she and Gilbert said they would like to “do the right thing” with the money and “give it back to those who need it” but they would buy a house too.

The owners of L&L Hawaiian Barbecue restaurant where Gilbert bought the winning lottery ticket are not complaining either: according to the rules the restaurant receives $1.3 million for selling the lucky lottery ticket.

Welcome To The MegaMillions Draw

The US MegaMillions draw is the biggest lottery in the country and has the largest prizes. The record for one jackpot in the draw stands at $390 million and was presented to two lucky lottery winners from Georgia in March 2007.

The draw started life on August 31 1996 as The Big Game with lottery tickets purchased in the six states of Michigan, Virginia, Maryland, Massachusetts, Georgia and Illinois. The seventh member state was New Jersey, which joined in 1997.

New York and Ohio signed up in May 2002 and the draw was renamed Mega Millions with a changed matrix and better prizes.

Washington joined in September of that year, followed by Texas in December 2003 and California in June 2005.

The Mega Millions draw became much larger as a result of a historic agreement in January 2010 when 23 other state lotteries merged with it and sold the Mega Millions lottery tickets.

Alongside the large jackpot sums to be enjoyed by any lottery winner, other prizes are available ranging from $2 to $250 000.

The distribution of the money from lottery tickets sold varies from state to state but generally half on the revenue is paid out to lucky lottery winners in prize money, 35% is invested in Government services in the member states and the remainder covers the retailers’ commissions and operating costs.

Mega Millions lottery tickets are available from the Lotter with discounts available when you purchase five or more.

The jackpot for the draw on Friday 17 December presently stands at $123 000 000.
