Do you feel Friday 13th is lucky or unlucky? One player of one of the largest global lotteries, the American Mega Millions certainly found last Friday to be lucky.

Daniel Bruckner from California was in Long Island visiting family and friends in the area. He went food shopping, saw the size of the Mega Millions jackpot and thought he would have a go.

The 35-year-old financial analyst had just $26 in his wallet after the shopping trip so he decided to use it all to buy lottery tickets. He went back to his wife and his father and forgot all about it.

Later he was woken by his wife after his father discovered the winning lottery ticket for this, the most local of the global lotteries, had been bought at the local store. To keep them both happy, Daniel went downstairs and checked the numbers. One by one they agreed with the ticket he held.

He checked and double-checked the numbers but still the results showed he held the winning lottery number and so had won $208,000,000.

The Bruckners had been comfortable financially but Christine, Daniel’s wife had recently lost her job as a mortgage advisor. The couple did not know exactly what they would do with the money beyond paying school and other bills.

There is no doubt that they will have a more comfortable future however.

A few nights later, Jacki, who is a news night editor with KNBC television heard the winner of the Mega Millions had bought the lucky lottery ticket in Pico Rivera, California where she and Gilbert live.

She checked the ticket and screamed when she realized their lottery tickets had just won them $266 million. “I felt like my legs were going to fall out from beneath me,” she said.

She immediately rang Gilbert, who was in bed, at 2am and woke him up. She also rang and woke up a friend with the news. Having thought about the alternative, Jacki then decided to finish her shift before going home.

Interviewed on NBC the next day, lottery winner Jacki told interviewers she would carry on working, as she could not imagine doing anything else. Both she and Gilbert said they would like to “do the right thing” with the money and “give it back to those who need it” but they would buy a house too.

The owners of L&L Hawaiian Barbecue restaurant where Gilbert bought the winning lottery ticket are not complaining either: according to the rules the restaurant receives $1.3 million for selling the lucky lottery ticket.

The US MegaMillions draw is the biggest lottery in the country and has the largest prizes. The record for one jackpot in the draw stands at $390 million and was presented to two lucky lottery winners from Georgia in March 2007.

The draw started life on August 31 1996 as The Big Game with lottery tickets purchased in the six states of Michigan, Virginia, Maryland, Massachusetts, Georgia and Illinois. The seventh member state was New Jersey, which joined in 1997.

New York and Ohio signed up in May 2002 and the draw was renamed Mega Millions with a changed matrix and better prizes.

Washington joined in September of that year, followed by Texas in December 2003 and California in June 2005.

The Mega Millions draw became much larger as a result of a historic agreement in January 2010 when 23 other state lotteries merged with it and sold the Mega Millions lottery tickets.

Alongside the large jackpot sums to be enjoyed by any lottery winner, other prizes are available ranging from $2 to $250 000.

The distribution of the money from lottery tickets sold varies from state to state but generally half on the revenue is paid out to lucky lottery winners in prize money, 35% is invested in Government services in the member states and the remainder covers the retailers’ commissions and operating costs.
