Welcome To The MegaMillions Draw

Posted by admin on Dec-15-2010

The US MegaMillions draw is the biggest lottery in the country and has the largest prizes. The record for one jackpot in the draw stands at $390 million and was presented to two lucky lottery winners from Georgia in March 2007.

The draw started life on August 31 1996 as The Big Game with lottery tickets purchased in the six states of Michigan, Virginia, Maryland, Massachusetts, Georgia and Illinois. The seventh member state was New Jersey, which joined in 1997.

New York and Ohio signed up in May 2002 and the draw was renamed Mega Millions with a changed matrix and better prizes.

Washington joined in September of that year, followed by Texas in December 2003 and California in June 2005.

The Mega Millions draw became much larger as a result of a historic agreement in January 2010 when 23 other state lotteries merged with it and sold the Mega Millions lottery tickets.

Alongside the large jackpot sums to be enjoyed by any lottery winner, other prizes are available ranging from $2 to $250 000.

The distribution of the money from lottery tickets sold varies from state to state but generally half on the revenue is paid out to lucky lottery winners in prize money, 35% is invested in Government services in the member states and the remainder covers the retailers’ commissions and operating costs.

Mega Millions lottery tickets are available from the Lotter with discounts available when you purchase five or more.

The jackpot for the draw on Friday 17 December presently stands at $123 000 000.

Olympic Preparation And Legacy

Posted by admin on Nov-29-2010

.

One of the problems left by hosting an Olympic games is continuing the inevitable surge of interest in sport created in the host country.

For this reason the London 2012 Olympic committee have announced £135 million British National Lottery funding to create the Places People Play scheme. This will be used to create new facilities around the country and train 40 000 sports leaders and this is hoped to encourage over 2 million people to get active.

A recent survey of 100 top-class athletes by the British National Lottery has also shown the average British athlete will spend 10 000 hours in training between the Beijing and London Olympics. That equates to six hours a day, six days a week, 12 months of the year for four years.

Jessica Ennis, world and European heptathlon champion, agrees this is accurate. She spends around 50 hours a week at the local park, in the gym or on the track. “All the hard work will be worth it though to simply compete in front of a home crowd at London 2012 – and to win a medal would just be a dream come true,” she said.

The average athlete also consumes 1.1 million calories per year. That is the same as eating three Christmas dinners a day! The average Olympic swimmer swims 1864 miles a year in preparation for the Games. The average synchronised swimmer holds his or her breath for a total of two and a half hours every week.

The wheelchair basketball team goes through around 100 tyres a year for their special chairs. The average athlete has been training for 11 years, started serious sport at the age of 14 and completes in seven international competitions a year.

Interestingly, 87 percent of those interviewed said they would have to find paid employment if they were not supported by the British National Lottery.

Obviously the Lottery funding has changed the face of British sport.

Lottery Grants Benefit Northern Charities

Posted by admin on Nov-26-2010

.

Two projects in the north of England have benefited from grants from the British National Lottery recently.

The first is the restoration of the 18th century Holgate windmill outside the city of York.

The mill was built in 1770 and continued to grind corn until 1933 when it began a process of decay. The suburbs of York grew around the building and it was generally forgotten. However, restoration work began in 2001 with the formation of the Holgate Windmill Preservation Trust.

The building itself has been improved but money was required to mount new sails to make the mill operational. After a telephone poll put the project as top for restoration the Lottery fund donated £46 500 to purchase the sails.

A further £50 000 is still required to provide a sack hoist, a standby electric motor and a lightning conductor but production of flour is expected to recommence in 2011.

This week saw the premiere of a movie with a difference.

Pupils, teachers and parents from the CYCES school in Cheadle, Cheshire gathered at the Showcase Cinema to see a screening of the movies ‘Dreamscape.’

This is an adventure film about dreams and nightmares produced by the pupils with the assistance of a grant from the National Lottery and the film production company ScreenPlay:Education. Ten pupils contributed ideas for the script and then brought it to life. They operated sound and camera equipment and edited the finished movie, which received a rapturous response from the audience.

CYCES school is operated by the Together Trust charity and caters for pupils with social, emotional and behavioural challenges.

IT Project Receives Lottery Boost

A Pride Media Association project designed to encourage silver surfers to get online has been awarded a cash boost by the National Lottery.

‘Never Too Old To Do IT’ has been given £204,000 from the National Lottery Reaching
Communities Fund to provide computer training activities for over 50’s in Middleton, Heywood and Castleton.

There are a host of activities on offer across venues in Heywood and Middleton that are
designed to suit everyone’s abilities. As well as teaching over 50’s the basics of I.T., the friendly tutors will also guide them through everything they need to know from switching the computer on, sending and receiving emails, through to selling unwanted items online.

Jonathan Burns, Project Development Officer said the project would help to tackle digital exclusion and help over 50’s access and benefit from the internet.

He said: “The project will offer an informative learning environment where older people can develop confidence in using modern technology in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere.

Participants will be able to develop a wide range of I.T. skills which are relevant to their everyday lives; whether it be sending an email to a relative abroad, paying bills online or using the internet to research family history or reconnect with old friends.”

There are a series of 8 week foundation courses at Middleton Arena, Heywood Library and Castleton Children’s Centre as well as a host of extra classes for those Silver Surfers who want to take their use of I.T. that little bit further.

Jean Nott, a student on the Foundation course said the project has helped open up a new world for her and others taking part.

She said: “I have two grandchildren in America and I can use the internet to keep in touch with them and find out what they are doing. I’m really pleased with the course and it’s already taught me so much.”

Pride Media Association is also hosting volunteer training session for over 50’s, giving participants the chance to learn how to pass on their skills to other individuals and become IT Mentors within their community.

A team of voluntary commentators providing football coverage to Watford hospital patients has been saved from closure thanks to a National Lottery grant.

Volunteers at registered charity Watford Hospital Radio have provided live commentary on all Watford’s home matches to blind and partially sighted supporters within the ground and patients at Watford General Hospital since 1955.

However, dated and faulty equipment threatened an end to the station’s 55-year history as the current team struggled to find the £4,000 needed for a new mixer and headphones.

Commentators Pete Munroe, David Roberts, Don Bickley and Julian Knight explored a number of ways to raise the cash – even considering a sponsored bungee jump off the top of the East Stand by 78-year-old Don.

However, an eleventh-hour grant from the lottery’s Awards For All scheme enabled the group to purchase new audio equipment used by professional broadcasters including the BBC.

David, a commentator since 1975, said: “We were facing a big problem – we didn’t think we could continue. We are one of the longest serving hospital radio teams in the country and we provide a unique, personalised service which would have disappeared had we not received the grant.

“It is fantastic we are able to continue – it is all about the patients really. The new equipment is superb to broadcast with – it is better than it has ever been before. We want to thank the football club as they’ve made us feel right at home and without them we wouldn’t be able to do it.”

The team officially launched the new equipment on Saturday as Watford hosted Nottingham Forest at Vicarage Road.

The station is broadcast throughout the hospital via headphones to patients hospital beds as well as in the accident and emergency waiting room.

Pete, a commentator since 1981, said: “It is good to get back because it has always been popular within the hospital. The accident and emergency room is often filled with sports people on a Saturday afternoon so they are able to listen to the football and we read out texts and messages from patients. The only downside to getting the grant is we can’t watch Don do a bungee jump.”

Thanks to the players of The National Lottery, the Olympic Park in Stratford is taking shape in style – with the 80,000-seater Olympic Stadium fast becoming a stunning focal point.

The arena will be the centrepiece of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, staging the opening and closing ceremonies as well as the track and field programmes. Construction of the Stadium began in May 2008 and is on course for completion in the Summer of 2011. The external structure of the stadium is finished, including all the sections to support the roof and upper tier terracing. Eight large cranes lifted the 28 steel roof trusses in place, with each truss weighing 15 tonnes. It is expected that the roof will be fully complete with the covering installed by autumn 2010.

The International Olympic Committee have been impressed with the progress being made and their President Jacques Rogge said: “I am in no doubt that in 2012 we will see a great Games that will make a difference to us all.”

The Olympic Delivery Authority, the body that is in charge of the venues, has now started construction on all permanent venues in the Olympic Park. To the south east corner of the Olympic Park, close to the Olympic Stadium, is another eye-catching site – the Aquatics Centre. The steel frame of the Aquatics Centre’s roof is almost complete and the 2,800 tonne structure will then be lifted into place on three concrete supports.

In another exciting development for London 2012, the Cultural Olympiad, the festival of celebration to go alongside the Games, now has its funding in place thanks to £16m of National Lottery funding, further illustrating the unique way in which National Lottery players’ are supporting London 2012.
