If you won the winning lottery number, would you keep it quiet? This is a constant debate among lottery players – to announce your win or not.

Last month a retired couple from Red Bud, Illinois won $157,800,000 in one of the largest of the global lotteries, the Mega Millions draw, and for three weeks kept the news to themselves.

Merle and Patricia Butler bought a $3 ticket from their local store and watched the draw reported on the television news. Merle wrote the winning numbers on a pad and compared them with the ticket in his wallet. He spotted that they had matched the Mega Ball number and then each of the other numbers matched. He looked at the ticket for a few moments and then calmly told Patricia they had won.

Patricia started giggling and, as Merle puts it, “She giggled for about four hours!”

Like so many lottery winners, they both stayed awake that night watching the news and checking the Internet to see if they had to share the prize with anyone. In the morning they knew there were two other jackpot winners and then took the ticket with its winning lottery number and locked in the local bank.

The couple only told five close family members and then calmly worked with legal and financial advisers from outside the town while the local press and their neighbours desperately tried to find out who had won the top prize. It was known the winner came from the town and a couple of other people were ‘accused’ of being the lucky player but nobody guessed the real winners.

Sadly, unlike several other American states, Illinois requires all the jackpot winners to go public in order to show the money is fairly allocated but the Butlers ensured they had everything in order before they held a press conference.

Merle told reporters that winning the money on this, one of the largest global lotteries, was like a full-time job in itself but it will certainly make their retirement a lot more comfortable. They have no intentions of moving away from their hometown and want to help their children and four grandchildren in the best way they can.

Sometimes the story of someone who has matched the winning lottery number shows they deserve their good luck.

Sadly too many people are still the victim of lottery scams that prey on our wish to win it big.

The Brooklyn Eagle newspaper recently warned residents in their area of the United States that a new lottery scam was operating in the vicinity. New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli reports that cheques are being received by potential victims together with a covering letter.

This letter is from a company calling itself either Guaranty Trust Inc., New York or Golden Gateway Financial, Division of Unclaimed Funds from Las Vegas or London.

The cheque is fake and the signature forged. The letter tells the recipients they have won a prize in the ‘American Lottery Sweepstakes Millions’ and that they should send money to claim the full prize.

Of course the money disappears and no prize is forthcoming.

At the same time, Bayshore Broadcasting in Canada reports a lady received an email telling her she had won a $5.5 million lottery in Australia.

Regrettably she replied to the email. A person pretending to be a doctor then persuaded her to send a $2500 ‘administration fee.’ Once she had sent that, the victim was then asked to send another $2850 as a ‘currency conversion fee.’

Needless to say, the lady has seen no winnings or even her money back.

If you receive any notice that you have won a lottery you did not pay to enter then ignore it. Never, ever, respond to any such communication. You will either lose money or personal information.

As Thomas DiNapoli explains, “An offer of easy money is usually too good to be true.”

One way to avoid the scams is to play lotteries online or visit your local shop to play one of the global lotteries.

Do you feel Friday 13th is lucky or unlucky? One player of one of the largest global lotteries, the American Mega Millions certainly found last Friday to be lucky.

Daniel Bruckner from California was in Long Island visiting family and friends in the area. He went food shopping, saw the size of the Mega Millions jackpot and thought he would have a go.

The 35-year-old financial analyst had just $26 in his wallet after the shopping trip so he decided to use it all to buy lottery tickets. He went back to his wife and his father and forgot all about it.

Later he was woken by his wife after his father discovered the winning lottery ticket for this, the most local of the global lotteries, had been bought at the local store. To keep them both happy, Daniel went downstairs and checked the numbers. One by one they agreed with the ticket he held.

He checked and double-checked the numbers but still the results showed he held the winning lottery number and so had won $208,000,000.

The Bruckners had been comfortable financially but Christine, Daniel’s wife had recently lost her job as a mortgage advisor. The couple did not know exactly what they would do with the money beyond paying school and other bills.

There is no doubt that they will have a more comfortable future however.

Scholarships’s Derived From South Carolina’s Lottery

South Carolina has been hit hard by the current recession. At the same time, it realizes its hope is in educating its citizens. So it applies the revenues from its state lottery to create a series of grants and scholarships to help its students meet the costs of a higher education. In turn, this money is administered by the SC Commission of Higher Education as well as its Department of Education.

The primary grant generated from the lottery is the SC Lottery Tuition Assistance Program. It is a true need-based grant, open to students who do not qualify for the lottery financed HOPE, LIFE or Palmetto scholarships. To qualify, a student must not only graduate from a South Carolina school, but also go to an SC institute of higher learning. It can be a two-year community school or a full academic university. Application must come with the completion of a FASFA form. If qualified, the maximum grant is about $900 for a full time student. It also includes financial aid for part time students, and that can range from at least $75 a credit hour.

There are also some special grants for hardship cases. The Byrnes and Kid’s Chance Scholarship are both geared towards children who have lost their parents in a job-related death. While the Byrnes varies with coverage, the Kid’s Chance will cover all expenses related to an advanced education.

The state also provides for those studying the animal sciences. The Wildlife Federation Grant is for students of veterinary or wildlife-related sciences. It must be to an accredited four-year university but can be renewable.

While the state has its share of grants, South Carolina also has loan forgiveness programs that can end up being tantamount to a grant. This is particularly useful if you intend to become a teacher. The Palmetto State has created the Teaching Fellows Program to meet its acute shortage of education professionals.

To qualify, a student must graduate from a South Caroline high school and fill out a FASFA form. He or she must not only make a commitment towards getting an education degree, but also to go to one of the state’s colleges or universities. While students are at it, they should apply for any federal grants, state scholarships or other forms of financial aid they can muster.

If the state approves, they will receive the grant in the form of a low-interest college loan. The amount can not be greater that $2,500 a year for freshmen and sophomores, and $5,000 for juniors and seniors. Upon getting their Bachelor’s in Education, students must then accept employment at a rural or otherwise under-served school district for a predetermined number of years. South Carolina will deduct from the total sum of the loan until it is all paid off. If a teacher leaves the job or is dismissed, he or she will be held responsible for the remaining debt.

This is just a sample of what South Carolina is doing with the revenues it is generating from its lottery. It has developed a number of scholarships as well, so a student should look into them, too. Looking for online college grants is another great initiative to take. Many times, financial assistance can be applied to online school in much the same manner as to an education at physical university.

He spoke with France-Info.com about his decision by saying, “It’s normal that we should share the money as we’ve known each other for 22 year.” He also added, “I went to see them and asked them to give me the usual €5 they contributed every week, and when they did, I told them we had all won €10 million.”

Early Retirement

An anonymous woman who had been spending €24 per week on the French Loto for years finally saw her faith pay off in the form of a €4 million jackpot on January 13^th, 2010. Following the win, she told reporters, “I’ve dreamed of this day and I’ve kept playing.” Immediately after hitting the €4 million jackpot, she quit her job as part of an early retirement.

Regarding the winning ticket, the woman claimed to be pretty calm until it was time to cash in the ticket. However, her husband had quite a different story about the situation as he said, “We had a very bad night, we just stayed awake.” Fortunately, the bad night didn’t detract from the overall feeling in the win, and the couple said the money will help them, “travel to please our children and their families.”

Saving the Company

Most people would love to splurge on fancy cars and lavish vacations after winning a €10 million lottery jackpot. However, a man named “Alexandre” chose to save his former company with his newly won €10 million French Loto jackpot. Alexandre used to be a lorry (truck) driver, and the company he worked for was facing a grim future.

But after winning the jackpot, Alexandre chose to buy out the struggling company and become its new CEO. He spoke about the decision by telling reporters, “I had the means to invest and save jobs, and it’s a world I know well. In fact it has been my life. That’s not something you can give up from one day to another.” But he’s cautious about the future after stating, “If I see we’re losing too much money, then I’ll quit.”

As you can see from the big jackpots that people have won through the French Loto, this is no doubt one of the best lotteries to play.

The British National Lottery is well known for it’s assistance with good causes, including it’s enormous contribution to the 2012 London Olympics, but of course other global lotteries help their communities too.

In South Africa, for example, the National Lottery Distribution Fund is supporting the JOMBA! Contemporary Dance Experience, an eleven-day arts festival starting on the 31 August.

The JOMBA! festival takes place in University of KwaZulu-Natal and around the city of Durban and includes a Fringe night to showcase new talent.
